01 - The Origin: How a Portrait Studio in Nanjing Sparked Nine Decades of Legacy

“International Photo” is more than a name. It is an enduring cultural emblem that has witnessed war, displacement, the rise of Hong Kong commerce, the golden age of movie productions, and the global development of Chinese art and culture.

The company traces its origins to the 1930s.

Founder Kao Ling Mei and his wife Jan Yun Bor first established a photography-based business in Nanjing. At a time when photography was still regarded as a refined professional art, the couple devoted themselves not only to portraiture, but also to the professional documentation of artworks for many distinguished artists. Through this work, they built deep friendships and lasting bonds of trust with the artistic community.

To them, photography was never simply a record of an image. It was a way of preserving culture, honouring life stories, and expressing the deepest form of human emotion through art.
